A clean slate

A clean slate.  A blank canvas.  A fresh white sheet of paper.  Or in this case an empty text box.  One of those days where I am sitting down without a clue as to what to write.  And I hear the Lord say 'you have a clean slate'.  I do, in more ways than one.  I can sit here and write whatever I want.  Something silly, something serious, something epic.  A poem, a short story, an essay.  Something that may make you smile, laugh or even shed a tear.  My hope is always that what I write will instruct, edify, encourage.  I feel the burden every time I write, because as we know words have power.  The pen is mightier than the sword, as they say.  What I want is for the reader to walk away with some hope, some grace, with their faith increased.
Did you ever get a detention when you were in school?  We are talking back in the day,  we're literally going old school here.  We are talking chalkboards in the classroom, not powerpoint or projectors even.  I remember in some classes those chalkboards being wall to wall.  And by the end of the school day that board was covered with a whole day's worth of words, sentences and illustrations.  Layer upon layer of equations, problems and drawings.  Half-heartedly erased throughout the day to make room for more.  Detention back in the day was spent helping the teacher clean up the classroom.  And one of those chores was cleaning that chalkboard.   You were required to get that vast expanse of  green slate totally cleaned and spotless before you could be excused.
Before I accepted the beautiful gift of salvation, my life was layered with words that hurt, sentences that condemned me and illustrations that portrayed my life as dirty and messy.  Years and years of sin and separation from God had put me in a detention that no amount of scrubbing could get clean,I had no chance of being excused.  The chalkboard of my life was one colossal panorama of hurt, mistakes and willful sin.  Layers of darkness, anguish and fear crusted over with anger, and all my efforts were only a whitewash.  What I spent years trying to correct, clean, and overcome God washed away in a moment.  All of the crud, all of the sin, all of the pain, washed clean; white as snow.  I remember as a child sometimes after a long day, usually during summer break or vacation that my mom would say, don't bother with a shower, just take a sponge bath.  Meaning, just wash up a bit and then head to bed.  You were still a little grimy and sweaty, but good enough.  Well, God does not just do things good enough.  He does things to perfection.  When He cleans us up, there is no more grime.  We are new creations.  We are renewed, restored.  We are clean slates.
My dad's sister was an artist.  She sold many paintings and was quite well known where she lived for her beautiful landscapes.  My mom tried to paint.  She had some talent, and I think if she had spent more time with it she could have been very good.  Now me?  I cannot draw a straight line.  I have absolutely no gift for drawing or painting.  I greatly appreciate fine art, but have no skills at all.  My daughter has gotten all the artistic genes in the family and is just beginning to develop those skills.  Can't wait to see where she goes with it.  Can you imagine being Rembrandt or Michelangelo?  To have not only the skills, but the God given gift to put onto canvas what is only seen in your mind?  To have the blank canvas in front of you and be able to pick up a brush and stroke after stroke it becomes a masterpiece?  From nothing to something beautiful and priceless?   To take a piece of fabric stretched over wood and transform it into something awe inspiring that captivates generations?  You, dear reader are that blank canvas.  And the Artist that has picked up the brush is none other than God Himself.  And what He is painting is not some abstract mess, but a self-portrait.  He is painstakingly replicating Himself in a work of art that has your face, your name.  You are His magnum opus.  You are His pièce de résistance.  You are the representation of God that can inspire others, that can draw them to Him.  Great art draws people in.  A painting doesn't have to speak to captivate, it doesn't have to convince you to appreciate it.  It just IS.  God has made us to just BE.  To be His autobiography to the world.  To be His self-portrait.  To be His love and His grace and His mercy.  To be His masterpiece.
So back to school.  Do you remember being told by the teacher to take out a blank piece of paper and today's assignment is to write an essay on some random subject?  Did your mind just go blank?  Oh the terror of a blank page.  Where to start, what to write about, how to get your point across.  I still feel that way when I sit down every Tuesday to write my blog!  How to accurately describe what I believe God wants me to share.  How to do my great big God justice with my words.  And even with the incredible resources of the internet to collect and verify information, feeling as though I am going to blow it every time.  Not to mention a computer that has more glitches that I can count, including today losing my whole post and having to start over.  But that's another story for another day.  Imagine having all the words, all the knowledge, all the truth and all you have to do is sit down and let it flow.  That is your life story my friend.  That same God who provided salvation through His Son has written your life story.  He has all the words, all the knowledge and all the truth and He has written it all down.  Starting with your name in the Lamb's book of life.  I always thought it was pretty cool when I was in high school to have my name in the 'Who's Who of American High School Students'.  Let me tell you, that book can burn up, it can be lost, it can be obliterated from every library.  But the Lamb's book of life cannot be destroyed.  And as a child of God, YOUR name is written in it.  And guess what, it is not on your merit, but on Jesus' blood.  And unlike those who would like to change history, as in those who declare the Holocaust never happened, or those who burn books, God is not into revisionist history.  What God has written is better than written in stone, it is written in blood.
Whew, sigh of gratitude.  This empty text box has been filled once again.  By His grace and inspiration I hope I have filled it with words and sentences and illustrations that point you to Him.  And that it shows you how loved, how precious, how truly amazing you are.  You are not a mistake.  You are not a piece of scribbled on paper to be crumpled up and thrown in the trash.  You are not a canvas that has been painted over so many times it is worthless.  You are a gem, a treasure.  You are created by God, inspired by Him.  Job 32:8, "But there is a spirit in man: the inspiration of the Almighty..." (KJV)  That word inspiration in the Hebrew means breath of God.  You have His breath in you.  His Spirit in you.  How can you be anything less than a masterpiece, His magnum opus.

Destiny's child

Karma, fate, kismet, serendipity.  Is life just an accidental roll of the dice?  Is it all just random events taking place and we are a victim of circumstance?  Who are we and why are we here?  Really these are probably questions for when I have had more coffee, but this has been on my mind lately.
If we are children of God then we are not random, we are not mistakes, we are not purposeless.  We were known by Him before we were in our mother's womb (Jeremiah 1:5).  We were then formed by Him, Psalm 139:13-14, "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well," (ESV). So He foreknew us, and in Romans 8:29 it says that He also predestined us.  Predestined us for what?  To be conformed into the image of His Son.  We have a destiny to fulfill according to His plan.  What
do those words mean?  Predestine, according to the English Oxford dictionary means "(of God) destine (someone) for a particular fate or purpose".  And the word destiny means "the particular state of a person or thing in the future, considering as resulting from earlier events," according to the Cambridge Dictionary.
So we are predestined for a particular purpose and we have destiny to fulfill because of that predestination.  The scripture says that we are predestined to be conformed or tailored into the image of Jesus.  What a beautiful picture that is.  My grandmother was wonderfully skilled seamstress.  She could take any piece of clothing, be it a uniform or a piece of designer couture and she could replicate that outfit so well that you could not tell the copy from the original.  That is what God wants to do in us.  He has a destiny in mind for us, and at the crux of that destiny is that we would be an accurate facsimile or likeness of His Son.  I think when we hear the word destiny we tend to think of lofty ambitions, driven by our own steam and our own ideals.  A destiny designed by God is just the opposite.  As we continue to read in Psalm 139:15-16, "My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.  Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them" (ESV).  God foreknew us, He predestined us, He wrote out our days for us.  Again, He wants us to be fit into the image of Jesus, which first means coming to salvation through Him.  What that entails is accepting that Jesus is the Son of God, born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life, died on the cross, rose again and is now in heaven interceding for us.  That is the first step to fulfilling our destiny in Him.  And that is what it is all about.  Living our lives in Him,  through Him, and for Him.  What comes next is following Jesus' command of loving God first and then loving others.  If we love God we will seek His will, if we love others we will begin fulfilling His will.  We then need to seek in His word for wisdom to live daily and we need to seek through prayer what our purpose is.  We were all made with specific giftings, specific talents and specific abilities.  He equips us, as it says in Hebrews 13:21, "may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to Him," (NLT).  So it is His good pleasure to not only tell us what His will is for us, but to equip us to do His will.  His will is for us to do good works, Ephesians 2:10, "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do," (NIV).
When you look at it that way, it seems that our God-given destiny is not out of reach.  Another important step in fulfilling our destiny in God is timing.  I really like what Pastor Tony Evans has to say about destiny; "God will often take you from where you are to where He wants you to be at what can be called a divine intersection. This is the time and situation in your life where your gifts, skills, passion, experience and personality merge together into either the revealing of, or carrying out of, your destiny.

What many of us try to do in our lives is rush ahead to the intersection, not realizing the importance of God’s perfect timing. Until your divine intersection comes, God is preparing you for that moment – for the people, tasks and purposes ahead. And He is also preparing your destiny, the people and places involved, for you. This is similar to what He did in Canaan when the Israelites entered the Promised Land. God had already provided for the Israelites because the Canaanites had dug the wells, cultivated the land and built the communities in that land.
Friend, if you learn anything at all from Scripture about reaching your destiny – learn this: Don’t go searching for your destiny. Go searching for your God.
Because it is in locating God amidst the ordinary things that He may have you doing now that you will watch Him intersect them into the extraordinary purpose and destiny He has for you. In other words, fulfill the duties of your routine responsibilities and attach those routine responsibilities to Him. When you loop God into your routine, the natural becomes the supernatural.

What is even better, is that you will discover that God can even use the weaknesses, or what you might consider the faults, in your life for His purpose. He merges all things together for good when you love Him and walk in His destiny for you."
We often confuse destiny with destination.  Our lives are more than our receiving salvation thereby gaining entry at the end of this mortal life into heaven.  Our life is marked by our journey here.  What we do, what we speak, how we love.  Everything we do is important to God.  Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus," (NLT).  "So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of [our great] God," 1 Corinthians 10:31 (AMP).  All that we do, if we are doing it with the Father's heart will glorify Him.
Thomas Merton wrote in No Man Is An Island,
“For each one of us, there is only one thing necessary: to fulfill our own destiny, according to God's will, to be what God wants us to be.”  And what God wants us to be is the representation of Jesus to this world.  So we as children of God love Him, love His people, read His word, seek His will, and rest in His timing.  But our rest is not idle; it is active.  Actively doing all we can to spread abroad the light of His love, for as 1 Peter 4:7-11 says, "Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer. Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes!" (MSG)  God's bright presence will be seen in us, His children of destiny.

All mighty, all holy, all loving
Beautiful, taking my breath away
Consuming fire, engulfing me in Your presence
Daunting yet approachable, opening Your arms to me

Ever loving, redemption sought me out
Flawless and perfect, yet You gave Your life for me
Goodness incarnate, taking my place
High on that cross on Calvary

Insufficient is my gratitude
Jesus, my all in all
Knowing my sin, my faults, my lack
Love eternal, grace everlasting, mercy unmerited

Majesty, king of my heart
Needing nothing, yet desiring my fellowship
Opening the floodgates of heaven
Pouring out Your blessings on me

Quiet, stillness fills my spirit, my soul
Remodeling me into Your likeness
Sweetly, so sweetly You change me
Tenderly loving this child of Yours

Uniting me to Your purpose
Vision comes, Your will I desire
Willingly I follow, Your word is a light for my path
Exceedingly wonderful are Your ways

You love me as no one else can
Zealously, fully, eternally

Those deadly doldrums

A dim cloud of despondency.  A miasma of melancholy.  A hovering of hopelessness.  What is it, that in the wakening from a dream, or a fleeting thought that flits through your mind upon arising that can darken your day and let this deep sadness envelop you?  I can barely remember the dream and I am under this weight of gloom and despair.  And if that is what has colored my day, what of those who are dealing with illness, or family problems or deep financial issues.  What do you do to chase those dark clouds away and retain your faith and trust in the Lord.
It amazes me that the Lord not only loves each of us, but hears us all and is attentive.  We had a woman who is just coming to know the Lord ask how does He hear us in the middle of all the millions of people on the earth.  Who really can answer that?  I am no great theologian or teacher of the bible.  Yes, I have and do study, but I think what I learn I have learned through life's experiences and through seeing the Lord's faithfulness.  I've thought about this a lot and as a mom I can, as scripture says, see through a glass darkly and see in part (1 Cor. 13:12).  As a mom, when my children were younger it could often be chaos in the house.  The day to day menial things going on.  The wash machine going, the dishwasher running, three kids running through the house. It was very rarely quiet.  But in the midst of all the noise and pandemonium, I could still hear my children and could still differentiate their voices.  Because I loved them and I knew the sound of their voice.  And if I, being only human can do that, how much more can our omnipotent, omnipresent God do?   As it says in Matthew 7:11, "If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing. You’re at least decent to your own children. So don’t you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?" (MSG)
Yes, our God, who conceived us in love always does better.  Above and beyond what we could hope or dream (Eph. 3:20).  He loves more.  He gives more.  He desires the best for us. There is none better than  He who is the One who can help us to achieve all that He has in store for us.  I have talked about my mom and dad before.  The struggles they had with alcoholism.  The demons that they fought.  But even in the midst of that life, they had love for me.  They loved me to the best of their ability.  It is only as an adult that I could even begin to understand them.  To have compassion for them.  To forgive them and know that they did their best.  So, they in their lack still loved me.  How much more in His abundance does God love me.  How much more does He love you.  And how greatly does He desire that you trust in that love.  That you walk in the knowledge of that love and that you live in the freedom of that love.
As I said, I woke up this morning just ineffably sad.  No reason, just some strange dream that invaded my soul and left me in tears.  Sheesh, even now I am crying, no reason, just one of those days.  But the God who formed me, who made me cares even about these silly tears.  He cares that I am sad, even if for no legitimate reason.  And don't you think if He can and does care about that, that He cares about your sickness?  That He cares that your rent is due and you don't have the funds.  That He cares that your husband or wife is emotionally unavailable or verbally or physically abusive.  He cares.  About the minuscule things, about the big things and about the things that threaten to drown you they seem so huge.
I can give you hundreds of scriptures to help.  I can.  But I won't.  I want you to dig, just like I have to.  If you can't think of a scripture, go on Google or something and type in 'scripture' and then what your looking for. I just typed in 'scripture' and 'trust'.  It came up with one link that said 20 verses about trust.  Another said 48 bible verses about trust.  Or open your bible and just start reading.  His promises are new and fresh every morning.  But how can you stand on a promise if you don't know it.  How can rely on His power if you don't access it.  It is like having electricity to your home, the power is on and paid for, but you never flip that switch.  And then you rail at the darkness.  Don't rail at the darkness.  Access the light and walk in it's freedom.
There is another verse that talks about even though we are sinful how we give good gifts to our children...Luke 11:13,
"So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him." (NLV)  One of the greatest gifts that God ever gave us was the gift of His Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit was given to us as a comforter.  As a teacher.  He is a counselor.  He helps us recall those thing we know about God.  The word for spirit in the Hebrew is ruwach, meaning breath or wind.  And in the Greek pneuma, meaning current of air, breath or breeze.  (Strong's Concordance).
When we are going through the doldrums there is a way out.  What a great word that is...Merriam-Webster gives this information on the word, "Everyone gets the doldrums - a feeling of low spirits and lack of energy - every once in a while. The doldrums experienced by sailors, however, are usually of a different variety. In the mid-19th century, the word once reserved for a feeling of despondency came to be applied to certain tropical regions of the ocean marked by the absence of strong winds. Sailing vessels, reliant on wind propulsion, struggled to make headway in these regions, leading to long, arduous journeys."  What a concise way to describe our lives.  Those doldrums the sailors experienced were due to lack of wind in their sails.  The doldrums in our life is due to the lack of wind, breeze, breathe of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  We have a solution that those sailors did not.  They could not just call up the wind to come and move them.  We have the freedom and the ability to call upon the Holy Spirit to move in our lives and to blow away those dim clouds of despondency.  To blast away that miasma of melancholy.  To sweep away that hovering hopelessness.  We have the breath of the Holy Spirit to get us out of those stagnant doldrums and into a fresh new day filled with His love, peace and joy.  With the love of our Heavenly Father, with the joy of our salvation through Jesus and the breath of the Holy Spirit in our lives we will not have a long arduous journey, but a new adventure every day.
